Statement of Concern Submitted to the AER Regarding CNUL Jackpine Mine Renewal Applications

March 7, 2024

On Thursday, March 7, 2024, Ecojustice—on behalf of Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) and Keepers of the Water (Keepers)—submitted a Statement of Concern (SOC) to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) regarding an integrated renewal application made by Canadian Natural Upgrading Limited (CNUL) for the renewal of Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act (EPEA) Water Act approvals for the Jackpine oil sands mine.

The submitted SOC outlines a request from AWA and Keepers for the AER to recognize the Athabasca River Basin as a “directly and adversely affected person”. This would grant procedural rights to the Basin, namely, standing in this proceeding to address substantive issues with CNUL’s Application

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.

Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their own freshness into you,

and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
