Adventures for Wilderness – Spring Flowers and Vistas on Tote Road

May 11, 1 p.m.
Benchlands

Join Benchlands resident Heinz Unger on a ramble through his rural neighbourhood West of Calgary, which includes wetlands, old-growth forest and amazing views of the mountains. The aspens should be greening out, early flowers will just be blooming and the birds returning to the forest. Discover this hidden gem that few people get the chance to visit.

Starting in Benchlands, we will hike through Lamont Butters land to access the Butters Ranching Ltd. Grazing lease. We will enjoy the solitude as we ramble through pastures, mixed and old growth forest, wetlands, creek valleys and crossings, and old beaver dams; we also get to see a recovering clearcut and can make up your own mind about Alberta’s approach to forestry.

There will also be the opportunity to see an example of a well managed grazing areas, with a well capture and cattle watering site and good fencing. Heinz will discuss the importance of sustainable grazing on our public lands.

This is an about 8 km afternoon hike with relatively little elevation gain.

Please note, the coordinator will be in touch closer to the event with the exact meeting location.

In the past I've seen chaos in the hills. And because I study cumulative effects, I know that everything is related. So I've come to realize that there is a big picture and we won't get there unless we plan along the way.
