Adventure for Wilderness – McKinnon Flats Nature Walk

July 20, 11 a.m.
McKinnon Flats

Join Justine Doll and Kay Fleming for an afternoon adventure discovering the native plants and pollinators at McKinnon Flats. Contribute to a citizen science project in the area, learn about the pollinators and plants that live there and connect with folk who are passionate about nature!

We will meet at McKinnon Flats and walk the trail along the riverbank. Be on the lookout for insect pollinators, native plants, and anything that catches your eye, while we stop to chat along the way. We will walk for 60-80 minutes and gather back at the parking lot for a picnic lunch afterwards. This is a collaborative community science walk, so we encourage you to come excited to share your knowledge about plants, birds, mammals, fungi, etc. too!

Justine Doll (she/her) is a master’s student at the University of Calgary studying native plant-pollinator interactions and the benefits of community science programs. Justine runs the Calgary Pollinators Project on iNaturalist and started hosting community pollinator walks in 2023 to teach about the importance of pollinators and help make science more welcoming and accessible. In her spare time, Justine likes to hike, snowboard, paint, and play volleyball.

Kay Fleming (they/them) is a local artist and graduate of the biology program of the University of Victoria. They are passionate about local plants and wildlife, and like to volunteer time to local environmental conservation and community science initiatives. In their free time Kay enjoys hiking, gardening, making art, and playing music.
