Joint letter requesting bison be listed as wildlife

March 15, 2024

Free-ranging bison, apart from in a few specialized regions, are still considered livestock in Alberta. This classification fails to acknowledge their vital role in the ecosystem and in Indigenous cultures, and limits the conservation and management of this unique species. AWA, along with six other organizations (Southern Alberta Group for the Environment, Foothills Bison Restoration Society, Canadian Parks and Wildlife Society Northern Alberta and Southern Alberta, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative and Alberta Chapter of the Wildlife Society) have written to Minister Schulz (Environment and Protected Areas) and Minister Wilson (Indigenous Relations) to request bison be listed as wildlife in Alberta.
