As large-scale irrigation projects began in the 1900s in Alberta, it came with kilometres upon kilometres of canals and ditches. It soon became apparent that as well as taking water from the rivers, these canals were taking fish. Fish entered the canals simply because there was nothing to prevent them from doing so. And just as it was for the water, the trip was a one-way journey for those fish; they died when the canals dried up in the fall. Known as fish entrainment, this is still an issue in the province.

Join us for an AWA Tuesday Talk with The Trout Trust, who will explain the issue of fish entrainment in Alberta, and how it impacts native trout populations.

About the Speakers:

The Trout Trust focuses on the health of the Bow River trout populations and more specifically, the issue of fish entrainment in irrigation canals throughout Alberta and the issue of transparency from our provincial and federal government pertaining to entrainment. The Trout Trust is researching the history of canals and irrigation in Alberta, and the effects of and possible solutions to this issue in Alberta and elsewhere, with the hopes of raising public awareness and encouraging a solution either from within the Provincial Government, or from outside it. Read more here.

To read more about fish entrainment, read AWA’s latest issue of the Wild Lands Advocate, which includes an article by The Trout Trust.

I needed something to pare the fat off my soul, to make me grateful again for being alive. And I knew… There is nothing like a wilderness journey for rekindling the fires of life.
