AWA letter of concern on Moraine Power Generation Project and carbon capture

AWA submitted a letter of concern to the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IACC) outlining our concerns with the Moraine Power Generation Project, a natural gas project near Whitecourt Alberta. The project proposes carbon capture as a way to offset the inevitable carbon emissions from burning natural gas.

AWA does not support the development of natural gas, and have several concerns regarding the project. These concerns include:

Claims for the efficiency of carbon capture are unproven.
Leakage of carbon pipelines or storage could be harmful to environmental and human health.
Disturbance of sensitive habitats and endangered species ranges due to infrastructure construction.
Questionable reliability of natural gas generators under climate change.
