A Conversation with Dene Tha’ Chief James Ahnassay

February 22, 2021

AWA’s prestigious Wilderness and Wildlife Defenders Award was presented to Dene Tha’ Chief James Ahnassay on February 22, 2021 as part 3 of 3 evenings making up the 22nd Martha Kostuch Annual Wilderness and Wildlife Defender Lecture.

The evening’s program, a conversation with Chief James Ahnassay and Cliff Wallis and a presentation and video of Bistcho Lake by Matt Munson provided attendees with tremendous first hand insight into caribou, the Hay-Zama Wildland – an International Ramsar Site, and Bistcho (Mbecho) Lake. You can watch a recording of the presentations in the following video:

There is an urgent need to engage people with nature. All aspects of it. Not just the pretty bears and cute snakes. Also the realities of it, the death, struggles, and pain. Not only are people losing touch with nature, they are losing touch with the realities of nature.
