West Central Alberta Caribou: Range Plan Slowdowns, Yet Solutions Within Reach

April 1, 2015

Wild Lands Advocate article, April 2015, by Carolyn Campbell

While Alberta delays completing range plans, AWA has helped postpone significant new energy leasing in an endangered mountain caribou range. An auction planned for March 12 did not proceed. This auction would have leased 21,000 hectares (212 square kilometres) in a relatively undisturbed area of the Redrock-Prairie Creek mountain caribou range in the Kakwa region of west central Alberta.

We have spectacular wilderness in Alberta, much of it under some form of protection. Every square millimetre of it has had to be fought for - will always have to be fought for, forever and ever. The struggle to retain and repair wilderness is conducted not just by a few individuals, but by large numbers of committed people, from all walks of life, all working in various ways toward the same end. We need to be grateful to all of them.
