Telling Our Own Stories: Kevin Van Tighem’s Martha Kostuch Lecture
Wild Lands Advocate article by: Ian Urquhart, AWA Conservation Staff and Editor, Wild Lands Advocate…
Alberta Wilderness Association is the oldest wilderness conservation group in Alberta (since 1965), seeking a network of representative protected areas. AWA has a proven history of being an effective, credible, and independent advocate for wildlands, wildwater, and wildlife.
Sponsored by the Alberta Wilderness and Wildlife Trust, the Martha Kostuch Annual Wilderness and Wildlife Lecture is an opportunity to present the ideas of researchers in a field related to conservation of wilderness. AWA invites speakers for our Martha Kostuch Annual Wilderness and Wildlife Lecture, to challenge AWA to seek new directions and ways to increase its effectiveness.
AWA is proud to present these lectures in pursuit of its mission “Defending Wild Alberta through Awareness and Action.”
An expert in consensus-based decision making her work helped join groups that traditionally might not have worked together. She sought ways to make the system work so we could move forward. Kostuch was a “feisty, fine woman, who never hesitated to speak her mind.” When she recognized things weren’t right, she would fight very hard, tirelessly; to make sure that there was a change and that it would be better for all of us. Kostuch, who died April 23, 2008, was a national leader, an Alberta Wilderness Defender and a woman who leaves a vital legacy. AWA has honoured her legacy and her memory by naming our annual lecture the Martha Kostuch Annual Wilderness and Wildlife Lecture.
