Template: Write a Letter to Stop the Grizzly Bear Hunt

As many of you know, Alberta’s decision to allow grizzly bears to be hunted again despite being a threatened species under the Wildlife Act is unacceptable and must be reversed immediately. To read more about this issue, check out our news release on it. We’re asking for your help! Write an email to Minister Todd Loewen with the help of our template below (feel free to customize it).

Subject: Reverse Changes to Legislation That Enables Public to Kill Grizzly Bears

Dear Minister Loewen,

Grizzly bears are a threatened species in Alberta, and people represent the greatest cause of their mortality. If a bear poses a public safety threat, the situation must be handled by a qualified wildlife officer, not any adult resident who is otherwise eligible to obtain a recreational hunting license.

While you insist that this is not a bear hunt, a member of the public killing a bear and then being allowed to keep it is different from a bear being euthanized by a Fish and Wildlife officer. This management approach is impractical and will not help to protect public safety. I implore you to instead follow measures laid out in Alberta’s Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan, such as hiring regional human-wildlife conflict specialists. Coexisting with grizzly bears means taking strong measures to prevent conflicts between people and bears, rather than allowing people to hunt them when they do.
