Composting Cows to Conserve Carnivores

February 1, 2013

Wild Lands Advocate article, February 2013, by Nigel Douglas. If you were making a list of positive conservation measures implemented in Alberta, composting cows wouldn’t necessarily be one of the first things that sprang to mind. But, in fact, Cardston County in southwestern Alberta has been showing tremendous leadership in taking measures to reduce conflicts between carnivores and livestock.

If I were asked to illustrate a scene of utter serenity and peace, I would choose a picture of a mother grizzly wandering across flower-covered slopes with two small cubs gamboling at her heels. This is truly a part of the deep tranquility that is the wilderness hallmark.
