Thinking about Rivers: Not Just Plumbing

October 1, 2015

Wild Lands Advocate article from October 2015 by David W. Mayhood.

There is something deeply troubling about the way we think about rivers. Several years ago I gave evidence at a public hearing. A power company was seeking approval for a dam on the Peace River. This was the second go-around for the proposal: a previous panel had rejected the same project some years earlier, requesting more studies.

The love of wilderness is more than a hunger for what is always beyond reach; it is also an expression of loyalty to the earth, the earth which bore us and sustains us, the only home we shall ever know, the only paradise we ever need – if only we had the eyes to see.
