The Winners of the 2025 Earth Day Photo Contest!

April 23, 2025

Our second annual Earth Day photo contest was another great success! We received over 100 submissions and there were over 700 votes cast.

Our winners are:

Landscapes Category

Bryce Horn for his photo of the northern lights. Here’s what he said about his image:

“After missing the big G5 aurora show in May 2024, I promised myself that I’d do my best to make it out of the city for other nights of (predicted) intense solar activity later in the year, hoping that it was just a matter of time before there would be other comparable opportunities. As the fall came, I made efforts to go out several nights as other chances arose, although without much success in the way of photos, as camera gear malfunctions and unfavourable weather patterns made it difficult to make the most of the promising data. But despite coming up short several times, I found that it was in making these attempts that I became enveloped in the process of trying. And so, on the night of October 7th, 2024 – with the data and weather looking even more favourable – I went out with renewed energy to test my luck again. And, this time, not only was I gifted with an incredible night of aurora, but I also managed to successfully capture parts of the peak activity behind this old church outside of Edmonton.”

Wildlife Category

Tanner Belcourt won the wildlife category for her close-up shot of a ground squirrel taken last summer. In her submission, Tanner said “We’re lucky to have such diverse landscapes in Alberta, where the prairies provide the ultimate habitat for these small but vital creatures.”

Our runner-ups include:

Jamie Bussey’s image of an American Pika in the wildlife category. Jamie’s photo, entitled “close call,” taken in Kananaskis Country in June 2024.

In the landscapes category, our runner up was Tyler Dixon, for his “Kananaskis Moose,” snapped in the Spray Valley in the fall of 2024.

Thanks very much to everyone who submitted and participated in the voting!
