Statement of Concern Regarding Chip Lake Logging Request for Proposals

AWA is concerned about a request for proposals (RFP) issued by Alberta Forestry that would grant a Commercial Timber Permit in Forest Management Units W01 and W02, including a significant amount of forests northwest of Chip Lake (west-central Alberta near Wildwood and Entwistle). AWA’s main concerns with this RFP are the following:
- Destruction of important wildlife habitat
- Lack of stakeholder and public consultation
- Low stand level harvest retention requirements
- No cumulative effects assessment in the area
- Potential challenges with reforestation
