Partners of AWA: How To Experience Nature Without Leaving The City

February 19, 2025

Do you need help getting inspired to get outside in this chilly weather? Maybe you’re just getting started on you “What’s Your 60?”

Our partners  at Parks of Calgary have made it their mission to help folks in Calgary make the most of our parks and natural areas. They have some great ideas for you!

Hey, we’re Kelsey and Alex! The lead adventurers behind Parks of Calgary.

And while we love hitting the road to explore the mountains, nature is actually closer than you think.

Instead of driving for hours to get your dose of fresh air and natural scenery, you can explore hundreds of Calgary parks and greenspaces without leaving city limits. So instead of just getting outside on the weekends or “when you find time,” outdoor adventures are truly accessible in every corner of the city.

Take Weaselhead Flats, a riverside wilderness teeming with wildlife, winding trails, and peaceful forested pathways. You’ll feel miles away from the city as you walk through aspen and balsam poplar groves. Or check out Fish Creek Provincial Park, one of North America’s largest urban parks. With over 100kms of diverse trails, ecosystems and even a historic ranch site, it’s the perfect destination for quiet walks in nature.

We’ve made it our mission to make outdoor adventures in Calgary simple, fun and accessible — that’s why we created an interactive map, the Adventure Atlas. So you can find parks, off-leash areas, art, attractions, local business and more without the long drive.

So the next time you need a nature fix, skip the highway and explore what’s right here in your backyard. You might be surprised by how “wild” Calgary can be, offering a similar sense of peace and adventure you’d expect from the mountains.
