Letter to Minister Loewen requesting the immediate reinstatement of trapping limits for furbearers
November 21, 2024
AWA wrote to Minister Todd Loewen, Forestry and Parks, opposing the removal of trapping limits for wolverine, fisher, Canada lynx and river otter. We provide evidence against this change, and question the validity of the change for the current season.
We requested the Minister:
- Immediately revise the Alberta guide to trapping regulations, and reinstate limitations on furbearing animals.
- Make a public statement about the mistake and reinstatement of limitations, and take appropriate steps to notify trappers.
- Provide documentation of any consultations leading to these changes.
- Set trapping quotas for wolverine, fisher, river otter and Canada lynx populations based on scientific evidence and provide this evidence. If evidence is based on trapping records, explain how these records accurately describe species populations.
- Seek public consultation and expert opinions, and publicly announce all future changes to hunting or trapping regulations.
