The group headed out on Saturday morning to the Upper Highwood of Kananaskis for a sketch and hike adventure with the talented artist Carolyn Fisher. We were joined by eight curious and artistic individuals who made for an excellent day in nature. As we talked about the geology, hydrology, ecology, conservation, and history of the area, Carolyn taught us how to use artwork for note-taking and documenting our experience.
We spoke of at-risk bull trout, learned how to identify various trees, and discussed how logging plans in the area threaten fish and water. Along the way, the group made many stops to identify plants and animals and share knowledge of the natural world.
At our final destination on the banks of the Highwood River, we gathered our sketches from the day to create a mosaic of all the creatures, plants, and water features that call this special place home. We hope that our artistic reflections of the Upper Highwood will help make a case for protecting it from industrial logging.
