Caribou Conservation Commitments: Joint ENGO letter to Alberta Government

October 10, 2023

In 2020, Alberta and Canada signed a caribou conservation agreement under Section 11 of the Species at Risk Act to ensure imminent actions would be taken to support the recovery of the endangered woodland caribou. Among other commitments, the Section 11 agreement committed Alberta to complete caribou range plans by 2025, of which only two out of 11 plans have since been finalized. AWA, CPAWS Northern Alberta, and Pembina Institute have ongoing concerns about caribou conservation in Alberta, including missed deadlines, shortcomings in the finalized caribou range plans, failure to implement finalized plans, and lack of protection of caribou habitat while the planning process continues.

If I were asked to illustrate a scene of utter serenity and peace, I would choose a picture of a mother grizzly wandering across flower-covered slopes with two small cubs gamboling at her heels. This is truly a part of the deep tranquility that is the wilderness hallmark.
