AWA Comments on Parks Canada’s Application for OECM Recognition of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch

May 12, 2023

Parks Canada is working on an application to recognize Ya Ha Tinda Ranch as an Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measure (OECM). Ya Ha Tinda is a horse ranch 1.5 km outside of Banff National Park, that is operated by Parks Canada and owned by the Government of Canada.

If the application is successful, the Ranch will contribute towards Canada’s goal to conserve 25 percent of lands and waters by 2023, and 30 percent by 2030.

As part of Parks Canada’s stakeholder engagement process, AWA provided a comment letter outlining our support for OECM recognition of Ya Ha Tinda Ranch and our considerations. AWA’s comment letter can be found here.

With rare exception cattle ranchers have been the best of guardians of the land entrusted to them. May we continue to be conscientious caretakers of this precious resource and hand it on to another generation unspoiled.
