AWA Comments on Canada’s 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy Milestone Document
January 24, 2024
AWA has written comments in response to Canada’s 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy Milestone Document. The letter is available here.
Following the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP15) for the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), Canada is working to update their National Biodiversity Strategy. A Milestone Document, outlining the process for reaching Biodiversity goals and criteria to measure success, was released in December. More information on Canada’s 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy is available at: https://www.canada.ca/en/environment-climate-change/services/biodiversity/national-biodiversity-strategy.html.
AWA supports the accountability promised in the document, and agrees strongly with the prioritization of protection and the inclusion of diversity and Indigenous knowledge. However, we find that sections of the document could be strengthened for prioritization of high biodiversity regions, restoration, and prioritization of environmental values over economic growth. We would like to see specified commitments and timelines towards Canada’s biodiversity goals.
