On a sunny afternoon in early June, we met Heinz Unger for a great early-season warm-up hike in the Ghost Wilderness. The fire road offered a wide, easy path for participants to wander up the 300 metres of elevation to the summit. Its width also afforded the chance for lots of conversation between participants and a chance to hunt for the first spring wildflowers.

We learned that one of our group had in fact made his home up on that lookout back in the 1970s and had brought along a photo album of his time working there to share with us. It was fantastic to hear Len’s stories from back in the day, and to see the beautiful photographs that he had saved from his time at the lookout. I am always amazed by the variety of people who join us on our adventures and their willingness to share their special expertise and experiences with us.

Another treat was when we reached the lookout site, in addition to the spectacular views of the Ghost, we were privileged to get a tour of the actual lookout and learn how they sight and report fires in conjunction with the other lookouts. Everyone enjoyed lounging on the grass in the sunshine before we headed back to the trailhead.
