Adventures for Wilderness, Full Moon Hike — January 27, 2024

January 27, 2024

A group of adventurers met at Sibbald Flats for an extraordinary outing on a crystal clear night. It was so bright the group didn’t need headlamps for much of the hike! The temperatures were mild and the company warm. The trail took us through open aspen forest to a lookout, where we could see across the open marsh and all the way to the front range. We continued through some recently logged stands of pine. We finished the hike in the open flats, where archeological evidence shows humans have gathered and camped for at least 11,000 years.

After our short hike we gathered under the full wolf moon for warm drinks around a roaring fire at the trailhead. It was Henrietta’s birthday and we all enjoyed the delicious cake she brought to share with everyone after a rousing chorus of Happy Birthday was sung.

If I were asked to illustrate a scene of utter serenity and peace, I would choose a picture of a mother grizzly wandering across flower-covered slopes with two small cubs gamboling at her heels. This is truly a part of the deep tranquility that is the wilderness hallmark.
