West Central Alberta Caribou: Range Plan Slowdowns, Yet Solutions Within Reach

April 1, 2015

Wild Lands Advocate article, April 2015, by Carolyn Campbell

While Alberta delays completing range plans, AWA has helped postpone significant new energy leasing in an endangered mountain caribou range. An auction planned for March 12 did not proceed. This auction would have leased 21,000 hectares (212 square kilometres) in a relatively undisturbed area of the Redrock-Prairie Creek mountain caribou range in the Kakwa region of west central Alberta.

If I were asked to illustrate a scene of utter serenity and peace, I would choose a picture of a mother grizzly wandering across flower-covered slopes with two small cubs gamboling at her heels. This is truly a part of the deep tranquility that is the wilderness hallmark.
