Funding for Flood Mitigation Turns a Blind Eye to River Ecolgoy

September 3, 2014

Wild Lands Advocate article, July 2014. Carolyn Campbell. Focusing attention on diverting river water and hardening riverbanks, rather than utilizing the natural flood-buffering characteristics of wetlands and river corridors, is a cause for concern in Alberta’s budget for flood protection proposed in April. Engineered waterways could pose problems during future floods. Logistics of current flood protection plans in southern Alberta are discussed.

It is my belief that Non-profit organizations like the Alberta Wilderness Association provide a clear framework that creates opportunities for Albertans to actively participate in the protection of their provinces resources.
