AWA Comments on Proposed Federal Recovery Strategy for Southern Mountain Woodland Caribou
March 18, 2014
Southern mountain woodland caribou populations (including Jasper, A La Peche, Narraway and Redrock-Prairie Creek populations in Alberta) have continued to decline despite being federally designated as threatened for fourteen years. However, current scientific evidence is that recovery of all southern mountain caribou local population units is technically and biologically feasible. In AWA’s opinion, the proposed federal Recovery Strategy does not include the best available evidence and is not strong enough to spark actions necessary to recover southern mountain woodland caribou populations. In its comments on the strategy, AWA urges the federal Environment Minister and Environment Canada to strengthen the Recovery Strategy in several key areas.
