Energy Industry Disturbances and Leases in Little Smoky Caribou and A La Peche Caribou Ranges: A Step in the Right Direction

July 25, 2013

Wild Lands Advocate update, April/May 2013, by Carolyn Campbell. New mineral rights leasing in Little Smoky have been deferred until the government develops range plans that will protect the Little Smoky and A La Peche caribou herd habitats. Caribou population decline in the area, as well as a dramatic increase in moose, deer, and wolves, is linked to industrial development.

We have spectacular wilderness in Alberta, much of it under some form of protection. Every square millimetre of it has had to be fought for - will always have to be fought for, forever and ever. The struggle to retain and repair wilderness is conducted not just by a few individuals, but by large numbers of committed people, from all walks of life, all working in various ways toward the same end. We need to be grateful to all of them.
