Bill 202 and Public Land Sales in Alberta

January 28, 2013

Wild Lands Advocate update, December 2012, by Katie Rasmussen. AWA has publicly supported private members Bill 202, which calls for increased public consultation and ecological assessments on sales of public grasslands. Rasmussen updates us on some context surrounding that bill.

“While we oppose public land sales in Alberta, Dr. Brown’s bill is at least a step in the right direction towards ensuring a more democratic and transparent process and acknowledging the need to evaluate and protect the sensitive and valuable ecosystems represented by these public lands. The long-term interest of all Albertans is best served by retaining public lands as a trust held by government for conservation purposes.”

It is my belief that Non-profit organizations like the Alberta Wilderness Association provide a clear framework that creates opportunities for Albertans to actively participate in the protection of their provinces resources.
