North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance

September 28, 2012

Wild Lands Advocate update, August 2012, by Madeline Wilson. Wilson celebrates the achievements of this organization, and its hard-working members, as they attempt to bring together stakeholders within the North Saskatchewan River watershed to protect and improve its ecosystem and water quality.

“Since 2005, the NSWA has been working to complete an Integrated Watershed Management Plan for the NSR watershed, a significant accomplishment and huge undertaking, which was completed in June 2012. (…) If the provincial government fails to heed these recommendations, it will be our loss indeed. Both the board of directors and the staff of the NSWA are made up of highly educated and experienced individuals coming from a wide variety of backgrounds. The expertise, tenacity, and commitment this group has devoted to completing the IWMP is commendable and worth both recognizing and celebrating.”

No public hearings are scheduled. Only one Alberta organization, the Alberta Wilderness Association, is independent enough that it continues championing public land and the people's right of access to it. So people must speak individually, as they have so many times before, directly to the premier, the minister of Sustainable Resource Development and their MLA, and remind them of what public land means to all of us, that none of it is surplus to our needs, that we do not want it sold.
