Protecting our Parks: Questions for Minister Nixon

April 14, 2021

Check out the Protecting our Parks storyboard, here!

Alberta Environment and Parks has shared very little information on the current status of the Optimizing Alberta Parks sites and how the new third-party partnerships will affect future park management. While we know from the December Parks announcement that these sites will continue to be protected, there are many unanswered questions about how the new partnerships will manage public access, park amenities and local ecosystems.

Take a moment to write to Premier Kenney and Minister Nixon to let them know why Alberta’s protected areas matter to you. Here are a few key points that may be worth raising:

1. From the parks partnership list released in December, only 105 sites from Optimizing Alberta Parks have new third-party partners listed to take over management.  Will sites without partners remain open to the public? If no partner is found, will a site be run by Alberta Parks staff?

2. Will all 175 sites under the Optimize Alberta Parks list be open for the 2021 season?

3. The Alberta Government was supposed to release the rules for new parks partnerships in May 2020, but never followed through. Which rules will new partners be expected to follow? Will the change in management have any impact on camping prices and parks infrastructure? Will new partners be expected to manage local park ecology?

Thank you for taking the time to speak up for parks! If you have any questions, reach out to AWA Conservation Specialist Grace Wark at gwark@abwild.ca
