AWA Feedback on West Fraser’s 2025 C5 FMP Milestone 2
July 14, 2025
Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) has submitted detailed feedback on West Fraser’s Milestone Information Package #2 for the C5 Forest Management Plan. Our review highlights major concerns about declining old-growth and interior old forest, the lack of clarity around how forest conditions were assessed, and the need for stronger, science-based biodiversity protections. We recommend higher retention levels in harvested areas, better alignment with federal Species at Risk Act requirements, and stronger commitments to native trout recovery—including transparent monitoring and habitat safeguards.
AWA also urges more precautionary water-management thresholds in this sensitive headwaters region and calls for the addition of a dedicated wetland protection VOIT, including meaningful buffers and long-term monitoring.
We appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback and will continue engaging as the plan develops. Protecting the watersheds, biodiversity, and species at risk within the C5 Forest Management Unit requires strong ecological safeguards and responsible forestry practices.
