AWA to Federal Minister: ‘Endangered’ Designation Urgent for Three Bat Species

June 7, 2013

In a letter to federal Environment Minister Peter Kent, AWA requests that he act on COSEWIC’s February 2012 emergency recommendation to list three Canadian bat species, including Alberta’s most common bat, as endangered. These species are suffering massive die-offs in eastern and central Canada due to the spread of white-nose syndrome. The extra research, habitat protection and public awareness from an ‘endangered’ listing would help slow what is now the most rapid declines of any wild Canadian mammals in recorded history.

When citizens and their representatives in government fail to place a high value on wilderness as a resource in itself, then its disappearance – especially in reasonably accessible locations – is swift and certain.
