This past September, Alberta Wilderness Association, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society, Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y), and the Sierra Club urged the Alberta Government to end new road construction in bear habitat until the amount of roads are at or below the amount identified in the provincial Grizzly Bear Recovery Plan.

Significant report by T. Adam Switalski and Cara R. Nelson in Biological Conservation magazine. Black bears are relatively tolerant of human use, but they were found to use closed, re-contoured roads considerably more than roads which were gated. This has important implications for access management in Alberta.

Last month, an adult male mountain goat was killed last within Jasper National Park. Though unintentional, the mountain goat was a casualty of research being conducted in association with Parks Canada to inform the Marmot Basin Ski Area expansion project.
