2012-01-26 Bragg Creek Forum Sees Considerable Opposition to Local Clearcut Logging

On January 26, nearly 500 people attended a public meeting hosted by the Sustain Kananaskis Group in Bragg Creek, to hear about plans for clearcut logging near West Bragg Creek. If the proposed plans go ahead, more than 700 hectares of forest will be felled, with considerable impacts on skiing and hiking trails in the area, not to mention wildlife habitat and drinking water.

An open house put on by Spray Lake Sawmills was scheduled on the same evening, and so Sustain Kananaskis invited local groups and organizations such as AWA to take part in a parallel meeting to present alternatives to the clearcut logging. The huge turnout demonstrated clearly that people are highly concerned about the negative impacts of the clearcut logging program. When considered alongside the determined local opposition to clearcut logging in the Castle region near Waterton, there is a growing realization that forestry operations in southern Alberta need a major shake up. Albertans are becoming increasingly frustrated that their opinions are being ignored and that decisions are being made over their heads.
