Difficulty 2

Lying between the mountains and the prairies, the Porcupine Hills are unique for their mixture of Rocky Mountain, Parkland and Grassland Natural Regions.

This easier hike along the Trout Creek Basin escarpment proceeds through a mix of open slopes and Douglas Fir forests, with mixed wood in places and juniper-covered sandstone outcrops along the top From the west escarpment of Trout Creek Basin are gorgeous views west to the Whaleback and Livingstone Ranges. Ruffed and sharptailed grouse are common and you might spot wild turkeys and deer.

Vivian Pharis is a biologist and educator. She has traveled this area for many years and offers hikers a wealth of knowledge on the local flora, fauna and management issues.
