Finding, monitoring and tagging turkey vultures. Are they expanding their range in Alberta?

Part of Mother Nature’s clean-up crew, turkey vultures have attracted relatively little scientific study.  In 2003 Wayne Nelson and several Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division colleagues  followed up on public reports of vultures on old buildings in eastern and northeastern Alberta and a significant study has arisen.  In 2006 Wayne retired as a wildlife biologist and, along with Rick Morse, carried the vulture project into his retirement and expanded it.

In 2008 Wayne and Rick began wing-tagging of young vultures at their nests (placing bands on their legs is not allowed).  Twenty were wing-tagged in 2008, and 35 were wing-tagged in 2009.  In future years, resightings of these and other marked, individually recognizable vultures will provide much information on the population dynamics and life history of these birds.
