2010-02-09 (Talk) From the Prairies to the Mountains - A Journey in Mushrooms

— filed under:

Close encounters with the fungi known as mushrooms.

When traveling from Calgary to Banff, five natural subregions may be encountered including Foothills Fescue, Foothills Parkland, Montane, Subalpine and Alpine.  The fungi that form mushrooms are an integral component of each of the plant communities that characterize these subregions, and are critical to the health and functioning of the various ecosystems.  This presentation will discuss the ecology of the main groups of mushrooms and their relatives, the relationships between fungi and plants, and the types of mushrooms one is likely to encounter on a journey from the prairies to the mountains.

Dr. Suzanne Visser is a Research Associate in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Calgary.  In the past she has conducted extensive studies on fungi.  Her current research focuses on bioremediation of oil-contaminated soils and reclamation of oil sands mine sites.
